San Cristobal volcano is situated at the northern end of the Maribios chain and stands at 1745 metres, the highest volcano and one of the most active in the country. This strato-volcano rises into a distinctive cone shape to form an impressive crater of over 500 meters in diameter. This volcano entered a new eruptive period in 1997 and since then has had many eruptions of gases, sand and ash, the most recent being September 2009. From the crater there are stunning views of the surrounding area and on clear days you can see as far as Cosigüina Volcano and El Salvador.
